What is a surge protection device (SPD) and do I need one?

A surge protection device (SPD) helps protect your electrical system, appliances, and electric vehicle from sudden, damaging power surges (often caused by lightning strikes or grid fluctuations).

A surge protection device (SPD) helps protect your electrical system, appliances, and electric vehicle from sudden, damaging power surges (often caused by lightning strikes or grid fluctuations).

How it works with your installation:

  • We offer and recommend it: While it is your choice, we highly recommend adding an SPD at purchase to provide an extra layer of security for your charger and your car's sensitive electronics.
  • You might already have one: Many modern properties or recently upgraded fuse boxes already have an SPD installed. If your property is already protected, you won't need to buy another one.
  • We can check on the day: Not sure if you have one? No problem. Our installer can inspect your consumer unit on your installation day to see if protection is already in place.
  • Available on the day: If you don't have one and decide you want the extra peace of mind, our electricians always carry stock in their vans. You can easily purchase and have an SPD fitted right there on the installation day.
